After you enable that, you will be able to create an "App password" for Outlook. That means you MUST enable 2FA (2-factor authentication) on your Google account. The solution is to use Google's "App passwords" workaround. This effectively makes it as useless as all other old versions of Outlook. This tells me my retail Office 2016 / Outlook 2016 does not use OAuth2. As far as I understand, if it was working correctly, a different (Google's?) prompt should appear for entering the username & password. But, the password is not accepted, meaning it doesn't work.
I personally installed Office 2016 (from Microsoft's ProPlusRetail.img which is supposed to be CTR and therefore non-Volume) with an OEM (Retail) key on Windows 7 and I was NOT able to get it working with Gmail using OAuth2! When I try to add a new e-mail account, it asks me for the e-mail address (which is the one) and the password. Another page ( ) even says that Outlook 2013 supports it, but it is not enabled by default and you have to enable it via registry.
With Outlook 2016 it apparently must be a Retail edition as Volume editions apparen't don't support OAuth2.
